The Toronto Raptors have cancelled a free agent camp that was originally scheduled for this weekend, sources have confirmed to Sportsnet.ca.
The camp was intended to allow the Raptors front office an opportunity to look at free agents who could potentially make the team’s summer league roster.
Without a draft pick in this year’s draft and with a young team that had three rookies this past season, it looked as though the team would move forward without bringing in any additional first-year players.
With Masai Ujiri now at the helm, if he decides to remodel the team and truly rebuild, Toronto could find itself trading into the draft. Ujiri spent the past weekend in Italy for Adidas Eurocamp, a three-day showcase of young talented Europeans between 18-21 years of age.
In addition to replacing Bryan Colangelo as general manager in Toronto, Ujiri will also take his spot on the NBA’s competition committee, according to a report from Doug Smith of the Toronto Star. The committee boasts a 10-member board of general managers, coaches, players and owners with the purpose of seeking avenues to improve the game and was reportedly scheduled to meet Wednesday in San Antonio.
In addition to getting settled into his new roles, Ujiri also continues to work on filling out both his front office staff and assistant coaching staff. With teams preparing for the draft on June 27th, Ujiri expects he will have to wait until after it to announce who will make up his front office.
While a decision on Dwane Casey’s fate as head coach still hasn’t been given, the assumption is that he will remain on in his current position. The contracts of the Raptors current assistants are set to expire June 30th. Names that have been linked with the Raptors as potential assistant coaching candidates include former Raptor Popeye Jones, Tyronn Lue and Nick Nurse.
