Jones beats Sigfridsson in Olympic rematch

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Olympic champion Jennifer Jones topped Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson in a rematch of the Sochi gold-medal game at the Players’ Championship on Thursday night.

With the score tied 6-6 in the final end, Jones blasted a quarry of rocks to sit shot stone. Sigfridsson couldn’t get her last rock closer to the button and the Winnipeg rink won 7-6.

Both teams now hold 3-1 records at the final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.

Jones defeated Sigfridsson 6-3 to win the gold medal at the Sochi Olympics in February.

Elsewhere, Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton thumped Ottawa’s Rachel Homan 7-2 in five ends. Lawton led 2-1 after two and pulled away with a three-ender in the third and a deuce in the fourth. Both teams hold 2-2 records in the tournament.

Scotland’s Eve Muirhead cruised to a 9-2 win in five ends against Calgary’s Crystal Webster. Muirhead scored triples in the first, third and fifth ends. Muirhead (4-0) is tied at the top of the women’s standings with Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni, who also remains undefeated at 4-0 following a 7-5 win over Edmonton’s Valerie Sweeting.

Sherry Middaugh, from Coldwater, Ont., iced Julie Hastings to win 8-6. Hastings, from Thornhill, Ont., fell to an 0-4 record while Middaugh (1-3) earned her first win at the tournament.
