Pinot wins hilly Romandie time trial to rise to 2nd overall

SION, Switzerland — Thibaut Pinot won the hilly time-trial stage at the six-day Tour of Romandie on Friday and rose to second overall behind leader Nairo Quintana.

Frenchman Pinot was two seconds faster than Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands, clocking 20 minutes, 21 seconds on a 15.1-kilometre (9.4-mile) route around Sion.

Bob Jungels of Luxembourg was third, nine seconds back, and was given the same time as fourth-placed Chris Froome of Britain and Colombia’s Quintana in sixth.

Quintana is 23 seconds clear of Pinot overall, with defending Romandie champion Ilnur Zakarin trailing Quintana by 0.26 in third.

The main mountain stage on Saturday, climbing to the Villars-sur-Ollon ski station, will likely decide the placings before a final stage Sunday favouring sprinters.
