Report: Chargers’ Melvin Gordon prepared to sit out without new deal

Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon is prepared to sit out if a new deal is not reached in time for the regular season according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter adds that there has been no progress made towards contract talks and that Gordon still wants to return in time for the regular season.

The 26-year-old has not participated in training camp and is set to become a free agent following the 2019 season. He scored 14 touchdowns last season and had a combined 1,375 yards from scrimmage.

Gordon is set to earn $5.6 million in the final year of his rookie contract this season. Back on Aug. 1, the running back reportedly requested a trade if he was not offered a contract extension ahead of Week 1 but the team did not grant permission for his agent to seek a trade partner.

Gordon joins Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott who is also holding out for a new deal but unlike Gordon, Elliott isn’t eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season.
