OHL Roundup: Marner dominant as Knights win big

LONDON, Ont. — Mitchell Marner scored a hat trick as the London Knights downed the Windsor Spitfires 6-1 on Friday night in Ontario Hockey League action.

The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect now has 18 goals and 50 points in 23 games — good for sole possession of fourth place in the OHL scoring race.

Cliff Pu, Kole Sherwood and Aaron Berisha also had goals for the Knights (19-4-2), who extended their winning streak to five games.

Christian Fischer found the back of the net on the power play in the third period for Windsor (16-9-4).

Tyler Parsons turned away 24 shots for London, with Garret Hughson making 26 saves for the Spitfires.

The Knights converted on all three of their power-play opportunities as Windsor was 1 for 2.

OTTERS 3 ATTACK 2 (SO)

ERIE, Pa. — Alex DeBrincat scored the only goal of the shootout as the Otters edged Owen Sound for their fifth-straight win.

Kyle Maksimovich and Vanya Lodnia found the back of the net in regulation for Erie (24-3-1).

Petrus Palmu and Jaden Lindo had goals for the Attack (11-10-6).

PETES 4 FRONTENACS 3 (OT)

KINGSTON, Ont. — Steven Lorentz scored the winner 15 seconds into overtime as Peterborough got past the Frontenacs.

Eric Cornel, Greg Betzold and Adam Timleck supplied the rest of the offence for the Petes (15-10-4) in regulation.

Jason Robertson had two goals and an assist for Kingston (17-8-3), which entered the game with a three-game winning streak. Spencer Watson added the other.

COLTS 6 WOLVES 4

SUDBURY, Ont. — Brendan Lemieux scored twice and added an assist as Barrie got past the Wolves.

Cordell James also had a pair of goals for the Colts (16-10-0). Kevin Labanc and Adrian Carbonara added the others.

Matt Schmalz and Dmitry Sokolov both struck twice for Sudbury (5-20-3).

Barrie goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood was ejected at 19:56 of the first period after receiving a match penalty for deliberate injury.

Teammates Kevin Labanc and Michael Webster were given game misconducts at the end of the second for their second fight of the game. Julius Nattinen of the Colts was assessed a game misconduct for being the third man in during that same stoppage.

Chad Heffernan and Conor Cummins of the Wolves were also ejected at the end of the second for their second fights.

STING 5 BATTALION 2

SARNIA, Ont. — Patrick White scored twice and added an assist as the Sting snapped a three-game skid with a win over North Bay.

Sasha Chmelevski, Pavel Zacha and Nikita Korostelev rounded out the attack for Sarnia (14-10-2).

Zach Shankar and Mathew Santos found the back of the net for the Battalion (12-11-2).

SPIRIT 4 FIREBIRDS 3 (SO)

FLINT, Mich. — Dylan Sadowy had the only goal in the shootout as Saginaw slipped past the Firebirds.

Artem Artemov, Connor Brown and Mitchell Stephens provided the offence in regulation for the Spirit (10-15-2).

Nicholas Caamano, Connor Chatham and Cullen Mercer scored for Flint (13-11-3).

BULLDOGS 7 STORM 4

GUELPH, Ont. — Stephen Harper had two goals and three assists to lead Hamilton past the Storm.

Benjamin Gleason scored twice and added an assist for the Bulldogs (11-16-1), who got a goal and three assists from Michael Cramarossa. Connor Walters and Matt Luff rounded out the attack.

Givani Smith struck twice and added an assist for Guelph (2-23-1). Jacob Harris and James McEwen also chipped in.

RANGERS 5 67’S 1

KITCHENER, Ont. — Adam Mascherin struck twice as the Rangers toppled Ottawa.

Jacob Cascagnette, David Miller and Jeremy Bracco also scored for Kitchener (21-3-3), which won its third in a row.

Ben Fanjoy had the lone goal for the 67’s (16-10-1), who had their four-game win streak halted.

ICEDOGS 4 STEELHEADS 1

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Johnny Corneil had a pair of goals as Niagara halted the Steelheads’ three-game winning streak.

Josh Ho-Sang and Anthony DiFruscia added the others for the IceDogs (14-11-2).

Josh Burnside scored on the power play for Mississauga (15-13-2).
