WHL Roundup: Schultz’s OT winner leads Medicine Hat over Kelowna

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – Ty Schultz scored 2:09 into overtime as the Medicine Hat Tigers edged the visiting Kelowna Rockets 8-7 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Steven Owre led the Medicine Hat (23-10-1) offence with a goal and three assists while Zach Fischer and Chad Butcher added a goal and two helpers apiece. Max Gerlach, Clayton Kirichenko, Mason Shaw and David Quenneville added the others.

Jake Kryski had two goals and two assists and Kole Lind scored once and set up three more to pace the Rockets (19-12-2). Cal Foote, Kyle Topping, Leif Mattson and Braydyn Chizen rounded out the scoring.

Nick Schneider made 27 saves for the win. Brodan Salmond took the loss after stopping 12-of-14 shots in relief. Starter Michael Herringer was pulled after allowing six goals on 21 shots in 42:51 of action.

Medicine Hat went 1 for 4 on the power play while Kelowna scored twice on five chances with the man advantage.

RAIDERS 4 OIL KINGS 3 (OT)

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Austin Glover scored 1:07 into the extra period as the Raiders edged Edmonton to halt a four-game slide.

Nick Heid, Cavin Leth and Drew Warkentine scored in regulation for Prince Albert (7-23-2), which got a 32-save outing from Ian Scott.

Lane Bauer, Aaron Irving and Will Warm struck for the Oil Kings (14-15-3). Patrick Dea stopped 25-of-29 shots in defeat.

COUGARS 4 AMERICANS 1

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Jared Bethune’s power-play goal in the second period stood up as the winner as the Cougars toppled Tri-City.

Ethan O’Rourke, Jansen Harkins and Josh Maser also scored for Prince George (23-8-2) as Ty Edmonds made 16 saves for the win.

Morgan Geekie kept the Americans (19-12-3) from being shut out. Beck Warm kicked out 33-of-36 shots in a losing cause.

BLAZERS 4 REBELS 3 (OT)

RED DEER, Alta. — Deven Sideroff scored his second goal 3:35 into the extra period as Kamloops slipped past the Rebels.

Spencer Bast and Rudolfs Balcers also scored for the Blazers (19-12-2). Dylan Ferguson made 29 saves for the victory.

Red Deer (16-12-6) got its offence from Cameron Hausinger, Austin Pratt and Evan Polei. Lasse Petersen turned aside 29-of-33 shots in defeat.

CHIEFS 3 THUNDERBIRDS 1

KENT, Wash. — Jaret Anderson-Dolan scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third as Spokane downed Seattle.

Dawson Weatherhill made 29 saves for the Chiefs (14-12-6), who also got goals from Ethan McIndoe and Kailer Yamamoto.

Keegan Kolesar put the Thunderbirds (16-12-3) on the board. Rylan Toth stopped 30-of-32 shots in the loss.

ROYALS 5 WINTERHAWKS 1

VICTORIA — Ryan Peckford had a pair of goals and Matthew Phillips tacked on three assists as the Royals beat Portland.

Jack Walker, Dante Hannoun and Carter Folk also scored for Victoria (17-14-3). Griffen Outhouse made 32 saves for the victory.

Joachim Blichfeld found the back of the net for the Winterhawks (18-14-1) as Cole Kehler turned out 29-of-34 shots in defeat.
