Cam Atkinson says he got 17 stitches after taking skate to back

Cam Atkinson told reporters after Saturday’s Columbus-Buffalo game that he feels as though he has a Guardian Angel watching over him after avoiding a serious injury from a skate blade.

Mid-way through the second period a few Sabres and Blue Jackets players became tangled in the corner, with Atkinson falling to the ice. Buffalo’s Marcus Foligno came in to hit Atkinson and also fell to the ice and when he tried to get up (to take a swipe at Brandon Dubinsky), Foligno accidentally stepped on Atkinson’s back.

The Blue Jackets forward left the ice with a noticeable rip in his jersey. He did return at the start of the third period and finished with nearly 18 minutes of ice time, but afterwards he told reporters he had to get 17 stitches in his shoulder.

Atkinson had three shots on goal and was a minus-1 in a 5-3 loss. He did, however, nearly tie the game late when Robin Lehner stoned him.
