The Montreal Canadiens have signed Torrey Mitchell to a three-year contract, the team announced Monday.
His new contract comes with a $1.2 million cap hit, which is down from $1.9 million on his last deal.
Mitchell, a pending UFA, was a trade deadline acquisition for the team. The Canadiens sent Jack Nevins and a 2016 seventh round pick to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for the 30-year-old centreman.

“Torrey is a versatile player who has a great deal of speed and experience,” said general manager Marc Bergevin in the team’s press release. “He was an excellent addition to our group of forwards last season, and offered a solid performance during the playoffs.”
Torrey had one point (an assist) in 14 regular season games with the Canadiens, and one goal and four assists in the team’s 12-game playoff run.
The news comes shortly after the Canadiens locked down defencemen Nathan Beaulieu and Jeff Petry, and amid speculation about what action the cap-strapped team will take in order to up its offensive power.
