The Washington Capitals are flying high, but there are a couple of notable pending unrestricted free agents that they will have to make decisions about when the time comes.
Holtby is one of them, but don’t expect the Capitals to lock down their No. 1 goaltender during the campaign.
“The Capitals and Holtby’s agent, David Kaye, have decided that they will not talk contract during the season,” said Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman during the Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. “They will wait until after the year. The focus will be on trying to win the Stanley Cup.”
Even though talks will not resume until the season is over, that’s not a bad sign regarding Holtby’s future in D.C.
“I’ve been told ‘don’t panic necessarily,’ Capitals fans, about that,” Friedman continued. “If you look at their history, they have signed [John] Carlson and [T.J.] Oshie after the season, before free agency. So just because it’s not happening now, it doesn’t mean it still possibly can’t happen.”
Holtby has been ever-present for the Capitals, posting a 2.82 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage to go with a 16-4-4 record in 25 appearances.
