Flames expected to sign U Sports forward Luke Philp

The Calgary Flames are expected to sign forward Luke Philp to an entry-level contract, according to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis.

In 24 games this season with the University of Alberta Golden Bears, Philp had 21 goals, 24 assists and 45 points. He also won the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy as the U Sports Player of the Year.

The 23-year-old had 42 goals, 61 assists and 103 points in 78 career games for the Golden Bears, and also helped Alberta win the David Johnston University Cup in 2018.

The Canmore, Alta., native also played 264 games in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice and Red Deer Rebels scoring 103 goals, 148 assists and 251 points.

Once signed, Philp will be the second Golden Bears alum on the Flames roster. Centre Derek Ryan played four seasons at the University of Alberta from 2007 to 2011.
