The NHL has tentatively finalized April 9 as the date for the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery.
“Of course, (this is) pending a lot of the things that we talked about off the top, but it does sound as though that will be when they hold the draft lottery,” Sportsnet‘s Chris Johnston said Saturday on “Hockey Night in Canada’s” Headlines segment.
There is a chance that the date of the draft lottery could change pending the NHL’s contingency plan for the coronavirus, which may include postponing some regular season games until later in April.
Ottawa Senators fans will likely be looking forward to this year’s draft lottery with two high draft picks.
Their chances of drawing a high pick have improved with a 24-32-12 record so far this season.
The Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils also have a good chance of snagging a top pick.
The NHL Draft Lottery determines which teams get the top three picks in the upcoming NHL Draft using computer-generated number combinations and a lottery ball-style machine to pick the winning numbers. The remaining picks will be allocated using the reverse standing order.
Alexis Lafreniere of the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic is projected to be the first overall pick at June’s draft in Montreal.
