Vancouver Canucks defenceman Alexander Edler has been suspended two games by the NHL following an incident that occurred during the Canucks’ 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena Thursday night.
At 18:17 of the second period, Edler ran into Coyotes netminder Mike Smith behind his net. A melee ensued after the hit, and Edler was dealt a five-minute charging major on the play.

Coyotes coach Dave Tippett appeared on Hockey Central @ Noon Friday and explained that Smith was dealing with a headache after second period. Smith, who has a concussion history, underwent testing from doctors Friday morning.
"Last time I looked the league was trying to protect the goaltenders a lot more than that. The league will look after it. Obviously we thought it was a tough hit against Smith," said Tippett. "We just hope he gets back quick because we’re in a tough playoff race."
