Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan announced his retirement Wednesday after a 21-year NHL career that was spent with just one franchise.
Doan was drafted seventh overall in the 1995 NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets and after playing one season in Winnipeg, he moved with the team to the desert in Arizona. Doan played 20 years with the Coyotes, finishing with 1,540 games played, 402 goals and 972 points.
That games played total is the fourth-most ever for a player who played his whole career with one team — and the longest for a non-Detroit player. The first three slots on that all-time list are all taken by Red Wings, in order: Gordie Howe (1,687), Nicklas Lidstrom (1,564), and Alex Delvecchio (1,549).
The 40-year-old is an involved member of the Phoenix community and a beloved and respected player in hockey circles. So as you’d imagine, people took to Twitter to give their send-offs to Doan.
