OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs trade Shane Wright to Windsor Spitfires

The Ontario Hockey League’s Kingston Frontenacs are trading star forward Shane Wright and a conditional 14th-round pick to the Windsor Spitfires.

In exchange, the Spitfires are sending the Frontenacs forward Ethan Miedema, defenceman Gavin McCarthy and seven draft picks including: a second pick in 2023, a third-rounder in 2023, fourth-round picks in 2024 and 2025 a conditional sixth-round pick in 2024, and two conditional picks (a fifth-rounder in 2024 and a sixth-rounder in 2025).

Wright was reassigned to his junior club on Friday, one day after he captained Canada to the gold medal in the 2023 world junior hockey championship. He finished the tournament with seven points in seven games including a goal on his 19th birthday during the final against Czechia.

Drafted fourth overall by Seattle last year, Wright struggled to remain in the Kraken’s lineup registering one assist in seven games. He was sent down to the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the American Hockey League in November for a four-game conditioning stint and scored five goals.

Wright rejoined the Kraken for one game, scoring a goal during a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 6, before he was loaned to Team Canada.

The Burlington, Ont., native was picked first overall by Kingston in 2019 OHL Priority Selection after he was granted exceptional status. He registered 71 goals and 160 points in two seasons with the Frontenacs.

Wright earned the CHL Rookie of the Year award in 2020 and served as Kingston’s captain, the youngest captain in OHL history, last season.

Miedema was drafted by Windsor with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. In 101 career OHL games, Miedema has recorded 69 points (25 goals and 44 assists).
