Blue Jays place left-hander Steven Matz on COVID-related IL

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed left-hander Steven Matz on the COVID-related injured list.

Right-hander Jeremy Beasley has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

Matz, who started and pitched 5.2 innings in Saturday’s 7-2 win over the Red Sox, is symptom-free but will undergo additional testing after an inconclusive test result was recorded Sunday morning.

The Blue Jays and Red Sox game on Sunday afternoon will go ahead as scheduled after the Blue Jays completed contact tracing protocols and additional rapid testing Sunday morning.

As of last Monday, the Blue Jays have more than 85 per cent of Tier 1 individuals vaccinated which allows for reduced protocols at and away from the ballpark. It is not publically known whether Matz has been vaccinated.

Matz has put together an impressive campaign with the Blue Jays, his first with the club after an off-season trade from the Mets. The 30-year-old has a 7-3 record with a 4.26 ERA and 75 strikeouts.
