Red Sox sign Ceddanne Rafaela to eight-year, $50 million extension

The Boston Red Sox have signed outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela to an eight-year, $50 million extension, according to multiple reports.

Rafaela, 23, made his MLB debut with Boston in 2023, appearing in 28 games for the last-place Red Sox. He slashed .241/.281/.386 over 83 at-bats.

This season, Rafaela has gone 7-for-30 with two triples and a stolen base.

He has already spent time at three defensive positions in his MLB career — second base, shortstop and centre field — with the majority of his time coming in centre.

According to Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has discussed potentially moving Rafaela to short this season to fill in for the injured Trevor Story.

Boston has been one of the surprise teams to open the 2024 season, posting a 7-3 record in 10 road games. The Red Sox have faced some lighter competition so far and return to Fenway Park for a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.
