Celtics’ Williams, 76ers’ Thybulle among players not to sign rookie extensions

As the 6 p.m. ET deadline passed on Monday, there were a few key NBA players who didn’t reach an agreement with their teams for rookie-scale contract extensions.

Without rookie-scale extensions, these select players will be eligible for restricted free agency in the 2023 off-season.

Here is a look at some of the notable names from the 2019 draft class that didn’t reach a deal:

Grant Williams, F, Boston Celtics

2021-22 per game statistics: 7.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, one assist, 47.5 per cent field-goal percentage

As a key contributor to the Celtics’ 2021-22 playoff run, Williams provided energy, and efficiency from behind the arc, shooting 39.3 per cent from downtown in his 24 postseason appearances last year.

The 22nd-overall pick in 2019 enters his fourth season on a team looking to defend their Eastern Conference title.

Cameron Johnson, F, Phoenix Suns

2021-22 per game statistics: 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 46 per cent field-goal percentage

Johnson has impressed as a three-point shooter since his rookie season, converting at a 39 per cent clip from beyond the arc during his first three seasons.

Like Williams, Johnson was an integral part of his own team’s finals run, receiving 21.1 minutes per game during the Suns’ 2020-21 postseason.

P.J. Washington, F, Charlotte Hornets

2021-22 per game statistics: 10.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 47 per cent field-goal percentage

Washington earned second-team All-Rookie honours in 2019-20.

Matisse Thybulle, F/C, Philadelphia 76ers

2021-22 per game statistics: 5.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 47 per cent field-goal percentage

Thybulle has already distinguished himself as a plus defender in the league, taking home two second-team All-Defensive titles in his first three seasons.

Rui Hachimura, F, Washington Wizards

2021-22 per game statistics: 11.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 49.1 per cent field-goal percentage

Hachimura, who was selected ninth overall in 2019, earned second-team All-Rookie honours in 2019-20.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker, G, Utah Jazz

2021-22 per game statistics: 10.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 37.2 per cent field-goal percentage

After starting his career with the New Orleans Pelicans, Alexander-Walker was dealt to the Utah Jazz at the 2022 trade deadline.

The Toronto native’s minutes were drastically decreased with his new team, dropping from 26.3 per game with the Pelicans to 9.9 with the Jazz.
