LeBron James tweeted Tuesday night that he is interested in getting an ownership group together to purchase the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream from a group that includes former Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler.
“Think I’m gone put together an ownership group for the The Dream,” James wrote on Twitter. “Whose in?”
There is no indication that Loeffler intends to sell her stake in the team.
Loeffler, a staunch supporter of outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump, lost her bid for re-election Tuesday to her Democrat opponent, Rev. Raphael Warnock, in Georgia’s Senate run-off elections.
Dream players have been very vocal in campaigning against Loeffler, who bought a stake in the team in 2011. In July, when the sports world took a stand against systemic racism and police brutality with protests, Loeffler sent a letter to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert to criticize the league’s support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Since then, Dream players and other WNBA players have been very open about promoting her opponent, including on social media and with t-shirts saying “Vote Warnock.”
James, who helped set up the organization “More Than A Vote” ahead of last fall’s U.S. general election, also addressed the Georgia results after the Lakers’ win over the Grizzlies.
“I’m proud of my people for getting out there and doing what they do best,” he said, “and that’s being heard and being seen and being powerful and being engaged.”
