Montreal Canadiens forward Sean Monahan suffered a new injury while rehabilitating his lower-body injury, but may still return to action before the regular season is over, according to general manager Kent Hughes.
Monahan, 28, first injured his foot in early December and was listed as day-to-day before the club prolonged his timeline. He last played Dec. 5 against the Vancouver Canucks and registered a goal.
The native of Brampton, Ont. spent nine seasons with the Calgary Flames, becoming a relatively consistent 20-goal scorer for them, before suffering injuries that led to scoring struggles in his final two years. He was dealt to the Canadiens in the 2022 off-season.
With Montreal, Monahan was slated to have a bounce-back season, scoring six goals and 17 points in 25 games before being sidelined with a foot injury.
Accounting for $6.375 million against the Canadiens’ salary cap, Monahan will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.
