The Montreal Canadiens traded goaltender Andrew Hammond to the New Jersey Devils for centreman Nate Schnarr on Monday.
Getting his start with the Ottawa Senators after a standout run with Bowling Green State University, Hammond spent four seasons with the Sens. His tenure in the capital was highlighted by a career-best 2014-15 season in which he posted a .941 save percentage.
In the years since, he’s spent time with the Colorado Avalanche and, this season, the Canadiens, posting a .920 save percentage through four appearances in 2021-22.
The 34-year-old is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, and currently carries a cap hit of $750,000.
Schnarr, 23, was originally drafted by the Coyotes in the third round in 2017, and has yet to appear in an NHL game.
With Montreal moving Hammond to New Jersey, speculation has heated up that Canadiens superstar goaltender Carey Price, who hasn’t played a game yet this season, may suit up before the end of the regular season.
