The injury that kept Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews from suiting up for the second game in a row is “a different situation” than a previously nagging wrist injury, coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters Monday after the team’s 3-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
The star pivot also sat out the opener of Toronto’s three-game series against Edmonton on Saturday. He was listed as a game-time decision earlier Monday after taking the ice with teammates for an optional skate.
Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported over the weekend that the injury is not “any cause for real alarm.”
The 23-year-old has 18 goals and 31 points in 20 games this season.
Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell, who backstopped the team to a 4-0 shutout Saturday, was out Monday after he reaggravated a leg injury.
