Maple Leafs’ Tavares hits 1,000 points against Islanders

Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares scored his 1,000th point against the New York Islanders, his former team, on Monday evening.

The milestone point came at the end of the third period with the Maple Leafs’ net empty and the extra attacker on. Tavares passed the puck to defenceman Morgan Rielly, who scored the game-tying game to force overtime.

Tavares’ first point came midway through the second period when he redirected a shot from Connor Timmins to bring the Maple Leafs within one. It was Tavares’ first goal in nine games.

Playing at UBS Arena in Long Island, Tavares was subject to near-constant boos whenever he possessed the puck. The 33-year-old captained the Long Island squad until 2018, when he chose to sign with Toronto in free agency.

Through nine years with the Islanders, Tavares notched 621 points, though his team made it to the post-season just three times in his tenure.
