If the Edmonton Oilers are looking to load up before the March 8 trade deadline, don’t expect defenceman Philip Broberg to be on the move for a rental player.
Broberg, who has zero points in 10 games with the Oilers this season, was loaned back to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League on Thursday.
Despite the former first-rounder’s struggles, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman doesn’t believe Broberg will be dealt for any player on an expiring contract.
“He’s not going anywhere for a rental,” Friedman said during Saturday Headlines on Hockey Night in Canada. “I do believe teams have asked and I believe the Oilers have made that clear.”
Broberg has 19 points (one goal and 18 assists) in 29 games with the Condors this season.
The 22-year-old from Orebro, Sweden, was drafted eighth overall by Edmonton in 2019 and has two goals and nine assists in 79 career games over three seasons with the club.
The Oilers (32-18-1) are third in the Pacific Division and earned a 4-3 overtime victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
