Oilers to host Flames in 2023 Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium

The Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic will return to where it all began, 20 years ago, in 2023.

The NHL announced Saturday that the Edmonton Oilers will host the Calgary Flames at Commonwealth Stadium on Oct. 29 in the seventh edition of the Heritage Classic.

For the first time ever, the Battle of Alberta will be played outdoors.

In 2003, the Oilers beat the Montreal Canadiens in the very first Heritage Classic — also the NHL’s first outdoor game — in front of 57,167 fans at Commonwealth Stadium — home of the CFL’s Edmonton Elks.

The Heritage Classic, which has always been in Canada, also has been held in Calgary (2011), Vancouver (2014), Winnipeg (2016), Regina (2019) and Hamilton (2022).

It will be the 38th regular-season outdoor contest.

The Flames and Oilers both will be playing in an outdoor game for the third time. Both teams are 1-1.
