Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad clears COVID protocol after false positive

Star New York Rangers centre Mika Zibanejad has been cleared to play Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres after clearing COVID-19 protocol because of a false positive test.

The team announced the move on Twitter on Saturday. He had been placed in COVID protocol earlier in the day.

The 33-year-old has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points in 17 games this season and is one of the Rangers’ go-to offensive players.

Zibanejad signed an eight-year contract extension in early October, with an average annual value of $8.5 million.

Entering this season, Zibanejad had 283 points in 323 regular-season games since the Rangers acquired him from the Ottawa Senators in 2016.
