Report: Five charges dropped against Galchenyuk, facing suspended sentence

Five charges against NHLer Alex Galchenyuk were dismissed and he pleaded guilty to a sixth, Katie Strang of The Athletic reported on Monday.

According to The Athletic, Galchenyuk pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour threatening charge.

The Athletic reported that court documents state Galchenyuk was sentenced to 30 days of jail time, 27 of which will be suspended after he completes an alcohol recovery program and goes 12 months without consuming/possessing alcohol. He had one day counted as time served.

Scottsdale Police previously confirmed to Sportsnet that Galchenyuk was arrested July 9 for a number of charges, including private property hit-and-run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest and threatening or intimidating. He was booked on misdemeanour charges and released the next day on his own recognizance.

Galchenyuk has since issued an apology via social media for his behaviour, saying he was “deeply ashamed” and “beyond sorry” for his “despicable and disrespectful behavior after drinking alcohol” on the night of his arrest. He also said he was entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program

His free-agent contract with the Arizona Coyotes, signed on July 1, was terminated by the team 13 days later, after it learned of the arrest.

Galchenyuk, 29, was drafted third overall by the Montreal Canadiens and has appeared in 654 games with seven teams over his 11-year career, including short stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.
