Canada to face Latvia in quarter-final round

SOCHI, Russia — Team Canada has its opponent for the quarter-finals of the Olympic hockey tournament: upstart Latvia, which upset Switzerland in the qualification round.

Eleventh-seeded Latvia beat sixth-seeded Switzerland 3-1 for its first victory of the tournament.

Going into that game, coach Ted Nolan said that he feels his team has some really good players and that "I wouldn’t say it would be an upset."

Nolan, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., won’t be able to say the same against Canada. The third-seeded Canadians face Latvia at Bolshoy Ice Dome at noon Eastern Time on Wednesday.

The winner of that game faces either the second-seeded United States or seventh-seeded Czech Republic in the semifinals.

In other quarter-final games, No. 1 Sweden faces tournament Cinderella No. 9 Slovenia and No. 4 Finland faces host No. 5 Russia.
