Jays’ Kawasaki rooting for Canada in gold game

DUNEDIN, Fla. – Count Munenori Kawasaki among the people who will be cheering for Canada’s Olympic hockey team in Sunday’s gold-medal final against Sweden.

Who is the colourful Toronto Blue Jays infielder picking?

“Canada wins,” he said Saturday. “Score? I think 2-1 Canada wins. Perfect. Sounds good. Let’s go Canada. O Canada. Let’s go Canucks.”

Kawasaki’s son Issho was born in Toronto last August, and the Japan native noted that, “I love Canada, because my son is Canuck. … Big, big, big – maybe he’ll play hockey.”

Though his passion is baseball, one of the most post popular sports in his native Japan, Kawasaki also realizes the importance of hockey in his son’s native land.

“My country is not hockey, but Canada is No. 1 at hockey,” he said. “Famous.”
