Does the FIFA Confederations Cup matter?

Another summer, and another major international soccer tournament.

The FIFA Confederation Cup kicks off Saturday in Brazil, with the host nation and seven other teams (including Spain and Italy) looking to win the crown.

The Confederation Cup divides opinion among soccer fans.

Some see it as nothing more than a test event for the World Cup host, and think it’s just one more tournament on an already crowded soccer calendar that we can do without.

Others view it as a chance to see nations such as Tahiti have their day in the sun and that it’s a competition full of surprises – like when the United States upset Spain in the semifinals in 2009.
