Fire earn 17th tie, hurt Union’s playoff chances

CHESTER, Pa. — Chicago’s Robert Earnshaw scored in the second minute of stoppage time to give the Fire a 1-1 draw at Philadelphia on Friday, hurting the Union’s playoff chances.

Earnshaw seized on a clearance attempt by goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi and lofted the ball over the goalie’s oustretched arm.

Philadelphia had taken a 1-0 lead in the 88th minute when Amobi Okugo sent home a deflected cross.

A win would have put the Union level with New York for the last playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago brought up its 17th draw of the season; the most by any team in the history of Major League Soccer, eclipsing the 16 it set in 2011 along with New York.
