Impact clear roster spot, deal Alexander to Dynamo for cash

MONTREAL — The Montreal Impact traded veteran midfielder Eric Alexander to the Houston Dynamo for targeted allocation money, the Major League Soccer club announced Friday.

The move clears space on the roster for the signing of another player, expected to be Argentine midfielder Hernan Bernardello.

"This transaction gives us some salary cap flexibility for potential changes to keep improving the roster in the short and long term," technical director Adam Braz said in a release.

Alexander played 12 games this season, recording one assist. He played a total of 32 games in two seasons with the Impact since he was acquired in 2015 along with defender Ambroise Oyongo from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for midfielder Felipe and an allocation spot.
