In a not so surprising move the Montreal Impact fired coach Frank Klopas early Sunday morning.
Klopas was in his second season in charge of Montreal after joining the club in December 2013. Assistant coach Mauro Biello will take over on an interim basis
The managerial shakeup came just hours after Montreal dropped a 2-1 road decision to Toronto FC, the team’s third loss of the week and fourth straight in Major League Soccer.
Montreal (8-11-5) has earned just 11 points out of a possible 33 in its last 11 games, and sits in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings (the top six make the playoffs) with 11 matches left in the regular season.
They also have serious injury problems with designated players Didier Drogba and Igancio Piatti both out, and captain Laurent Ciman will miss the next three games due to suspension and international commitments.
The two things going for the Impact are that they are only one point out of a playoff berth, and that they have games in hand on every team in the East—as many as four games on Orlando City (6th in the East) and New York City FC (8th).
Can the Impact still make the playoffs? Will the coaching change help them turn things around? Or is Montreal going to continue to spiral towards the bottom of the Eastern standings and miss out on the post-season?
