TFC close to adding Armando Cooper on loan deal

Toronto FC is very close to finalizing a loan deal for Panamanian midfielder Armando Cooper, a source confirmed to Sportsnet.ca.

If all goes well, the deal should be completed by next week, pending the completion of paperwork by the Major League Soccer club.

TFC has been looking to add an attacking midfielder to its roster in recent weeks, with general manager Tim Bezbatchenko identifying potential targets in South America and Europe. With the Reds set to enter the regular season stretch, and Benoit Cheyrou slow to come back from a hamstring injury, the addition of Cooper should give them a valued attacking option in midfield–someone who is solid in possession, can move the ball quickly, and link up effectively with forwards Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore.

Cooper, 28, has earned over 50 caps for Panama’s national team, and was a member of his country’s youth side that competed at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup staged in Canada.

He has spent time at a number of pro clubs during his career, including Arabe Unido in his native Panama, Godoy Cruz in Argentina, Otelul Galati in Romania and FC St. Pauli in Germany.

A TFC spokesperson did not immediately respond to Sportsnet’s text message seeking comment.

Reports of TFC going after Cooper first appeared in the Panamanian media.
