The Vancouver Whitecaps locked down two key members of their squad on Tuesday, signing midfielder Felipe and forward Yordy Reyna to new contracts, the team announced.
Reyna, 25, is now signed through 2019 with team options for 2020 and 2021. Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) was used to extend the Peruvian’s deal. Felipe, meanwhile, is under contract to 2020 with an option for the 2021 season.
Both players figure to be starters under new head coach Marc Dos Santos. Reyna was the joint team leader in assists (11) and was involved in 17 goals. Only Alphonso Davies (19) and Kei Kamara (20) had more involvements.
“Yordy has shown that he has qualities that are important for our club,” said Dos Santos. “He’s fast, direct, and has the ability to create chances for himself and others while playing different roles in the attack. We believe he can still become even better.”
Despite an inconsistent year by his standards, Felipe was still one of the top passers for the Whitecaps and led the club in chances created as well.
“Felipe is a player who suits what we want to do,” Dos Santos added. “He has the characteristics and qualities that we look for in his position. We’re looking forward to getting the best out of Felipe.”
