The National Bank Open presented by Rogers enters the round of 32 on Thursday in Toronto and Montreal.
While the men's tournament took a big hit on Wednesday with Felix Auger-Aliassime's withdrawal because of injury and opening-match losses for top seed Alexander Zverev and No. 4 Daniil Medvedev, the Montreal event could become very unpredictable with the world's top five players out or injured.
The Toronto women's tournament, meanwhile, has nine of its top 10 seeds still in the mix for the title.
Here's a look at some of the big storylines for Thursday:
The next one from Spain?
The country that produced Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz might have another star in the making in Rafael Jodar.
The 19-year-old grew up watching Nadal in Spain, and now is making his own headlines.
Jodar reached the quarterfinals at the French Open this year and rose to No. 15 in the rankings after a loss to Taylor Fritz in the DC Open final on Monday.
Jodar gets the featured match on Thursday night against No. 11 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.
It's a rematch of a Washington quarterfinal, won in three sets by Jodar last week.
Sabalenka returns to action
After a so-so stretch on grass and clay, Aryna Sabalenka is back on her preferred hard-court surface this week.
The world No. 1 made quick work of Japan's Moyuka Uchijima in her Toronto opener, winning 6-3, 6-3.
Chinese veteran Zhuai Shang provides the opposition for Sabalenka on Thursday night in Toronto.
All four of Sabalenka's Grand Slam titles have come on hard-courts (in 2024 and '25 at the US Open and 2023 and '24 at the Australian Open.
Double the star power
In an extreme rarity, an opening-round doubles match will be on Centre Court on Thursday night.
The reason? Rising Filipino star Alexandra Eala, who sold out Centre Court for her win in her singles kickoff on Wednesday night, is teaming up with the legendary Venus Williams. The duo played together in Germany earlier this year and won one match before being eliminated.
