2016-17 NHL Suspension Tracker: Subban fined for dive

Tim and Stephen discuss why Ryan Getzlaf was only fined for using a homophobic slur and if they missed an opportunity to really make a statement against such language.

Four punishments have been handed out in the playoffs.

The NHL’s department of player safety handed out a one-game playoff suspension to Columbus’s Matt Calvert for a nasty cross-check at the end of Game 2 versus Pittsburgh. Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl escaped with a fine for spearing Sharks forward Chris Tierney in a,um, sensitive region. And Nashville’s P.K. Subban was dealt his third career embellishment fine for an incident in the St. Louis series.

Most recently, Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf was fined $10,000 for using a homophobic slur in the Western Conference final.

Last season, 65 offending NHLers combined to forfeit more than $2.7 million due to reckless plays and off-ice decisions.

Suspensions and fines are down significantly this season. Keep it here for an ongoing rundown of player safety’s 2016-17 supplementary discipline.
