He plays. He acts. He models (with rubber ducks).
Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin has been steadily carving out his identity since his NHL debut, becoming a triple-threat of sorts in the hockey world.
It’s a bit of a new concept, as far as the NHL goes.
“You can call it expanding the brand or whatever, but I think it’s just fun to be out there and to be able to talk to top athletes in other sports and see what they’re doing,” Seguin told The Dallas Morning News. “I’m meeting LeBron James and Kobe Bryant and Derek Jeter. I get to pick their brains, and they’re superstars who have made it, and that’s where I want to be some day.”
This year alone, the 23-year-old has posed in ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue, opened up in a piece for The Players’ Tribune, and filmed a cameo in the upcoming Jay Baruchel-directed hockey movie Goon: Last of the Enforcers.
He juggles these off-ice tasks like he does pucks on the ice (while wearing a GoPro! Remember this?).
Which is to say, really well.
“Any of these things away from hockey, those are my calls,” said Seguin. “If I get an invitation, it’s up to me to say yes or no. I kind of have the personality where I’m all for it. I think it’s a lot of fun.”
A simple glance at the score sheet — and seriously, that GoPro video — suggests his off-ice accomplishments haven’t served as distractions for his on-ice performance. Seguin’s 161 points over the last two seasons ranks him third in the league over that time period.
As his non-hockey career grows, his hockey focus remains strong.
“Winning tops everything,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “As long as the team is No. 1, then the rest falls into place. That’s one thing I know that he knows, and something I truly believe that he lives.”
