The path is opening up for Milos Raonic at the National Bank Open in Toronto.
American Mackenzie McDonald upset sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the Round of 16.
McDonald will play Raonic, who moved on with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Japan's Taro Daniel.
McDonald, 28, is ranked No. 59 in the world looking for his first ATP title. He has faced Raonic twice, both in 2018.
Raonic has missed most of the past two years with injuries before making a return to tour last month. In the first round, he upset world No. 10 Frances Tiafoe in three sets.
The 32-year-old from nearby Thornhill, Ont., has admitted that, with his injury history, this could be the last tournament he plays in Toronto.
