Needing a win, Canada's Leylah Fernandez came through with a clutch 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Czechia's Marketa Vondrousova to even up the Billie Jean King Cup semifinals at 1-1 on Saturday.
Fernandez now has a 14-3 career record in the Billie Jean King Cup.
The win for the Canadian sets up a doubles match with a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup finals on the line. Italy has booked its spot in the final and awaits the winner of Canada versus Czechia.
Canada's Marina Stakusic lost to Czechia's Barbora Krejcikova 6-2, 6-1 as the Czechs took a 1-0 lead after the opening match.
Stakusic, 18, has been a breakout star for Canada in the event, but was in tough against the 10th-ranked Krejcikova. The Czech was the highest-ranked player the youngster from Mississauga, Ont., had ever faced.
